Powerline Ethernet

I purchased 2 pairs of TP-Link TL-PA211 Kit Aus Powerline Ethernet Adapter Multi-Streaming HomePlug from ebay.com.au for $69.99 each. You may sync all 4 adaptors as one network

I have removed the long UTP cables between rooms in my home.
I am now able to use the power points for my LAN.

The TP-LINK adaptors come with a built in Fast Ethernet RJ45 connector. It was simple to swap over my patch cables from the Fast Ethernet switch to the powerline adaptor.

The adaptors needed a direct connection to the power point. I purchased some PiggyBack Extension Cords to enable using an existing single power point for both Ethernet and appliance. Do not use power boards as most have filters that block the Ethernet adaptors.

The adaptors work with Windows, Mac OS and Linux systems. My installation has a switch or router at each node.

The specifications say that they work up to 200Mbits across your power wires. On testing my networking connectivity, I was able to utilise the full speed on my internet connection from behind the powerline adaptors.

I transferred a large file internally and was able to get 70Mbits from host to host with the Powerline Ethernet included in the transfer path.

TPG IPTV is working well via the powerline adaptors. I use igmpproxy on our gateway PC to forward the service across the LAN.

This weekend I have installed Zentyal 2.3 Linux on to my gateway PC.
http://www.zentyal.org/beta/

This is a beta version of Zentyal 3.0 due out in September 2012. It uses the beta version of Ubuntu 12.4. A stable release of Ubuntu 12.4 is due out later in April 2012.

I have updated my Zentyal page with details of the new distribution.
http://rocode.com/zentyal/

Previously I used Ubuntu 11.10 with the Zentyal packages because the previous versions of Zentyal would not boot on my Asus EeeBox Mini PC. I was keen to try installing the official Zentyal distribution (not just the addon packages).
